Psychological Counseling

Psychological Counseling is Available

Certain individuals may benefit from psychological counselling to help them on their weight loss journey.

These patients are invited to meet with our compassionate weight loss psychologist. She has extensive experience counselling bariatric patients.

Risk of Poor Psychological Preparation

Between 5 to 20% of obese individuals who try to lose weight without outside help (including the help obtained with bariatric surgery) succeed in only losing 5% of their total body weight and few maintain this weight loss for five years.

These results are strong indicators of the weight loss challenge ahead.

Taking these low success rates into account, many bariatric professionals have adjusted their previous approach to helping patients lose weight.

Why is Psychological Counselling Beneficial?

Psychological counselling, when indicated is increasingly being seen as beneficial for patients who find it difficult to “flip a switch” and suddenly exhibit strong dietary willpower.

Often bariatric patients require counselling to identify the psychological reasons and behavioural factors that lead to their overeating.

Strong Psychological Foundation

Providing a strong psychological foundation and a longer postoperative period of follow-up support for weight loss patients helps many individuals achieve long-term weight loss success.

In fact, the Cochrane review organization has found that increasing the intensity and duration of psychological support significantly improves weight loss results.

Our psychological support, where necessary, can review the psychological and behavioural factors that contribute to the patient’s struggle with obesity.

By addressing and eventually eliminating these negative factors, bariatric patients experience increased success in losing excess weight.
